Summer Game Fest Preview: Which MMOs Will Make Waves?

By Boss Mode “E3 is dead. Summer Game Fest is the new king. And June 5th can’t come fast enough.”

The New Era of Gaming Showcases

E3 is gone. Actually, gone this time.

The Entertainment Software Association tried to revive it with “iicon” (Interactive Innovation Conference) in late April 2026, but that was an invite-only executive networking event. No public. No reveals. No hype.

Just suits in a Las Vegas hotel talking about “synergy” and “market opportunities.”

That’s not E3. That’s a LinkedIn conference with better catering.

The real action? Summer Game Fest.

Geoff Keighley’s brainchild has become the de facto replacement for E3. And on June 5-8, 2026, it’s happening again.

Live showcase from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. World premieres. Exclusive gameplay. Publisher showcases. The works.

For MMO players, this is it. This is when we find out what’s coming for the rest of 2026 and beyond.

New expansions. Fresh announcements. Maybe, maybe, that game we’ve been waiting years for finally gets a release date.

So let’s talk about what to expect. Which MMOs are likely to show up? What announcements are realistic? And which hype trains should we board (or avoid)?

Summer Game Fest 2026 is 40 days away. Let’s preview what’s coming.

What We Know About Summer Game Fest 2026

Here are the confirmed details:

The Schedule:

  • June 5, 2026 – Main Showcase (2PM PT / 5PM ET / 10PM BST)
    • Hosted by Geoff Keighley at the Dolby Theatre
    • Approximately 2 hours long
    • World premieres, exclusive gameplay, major announcements
    • Streamed on YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Steam, and more
  • June 6-8, 2026 – SGF Play Days
    • Hands-on demos for press and content creators
    • Produced by iam8bit in downtown Los Angeles
  • June 8, 2026 – The Game Business Live
    • Industry-focused panels and discussions

What to Expect:

According to Geoff Keighley, SGF 2026 will be the “biggest Summer Game Fest yet.” That’s marketing speak, but last year drew 50+ million viewers, so the bar is high.

Confirmed participants include major publishers like:

  • PlayStation
  • Xbox
  • Nintendo (likely)
  • EA
  • Ubisoft
  • Square Enix
  • Capcom
  • And more

For MMO fans, this is where the magic happens.

The MMOs We’re DEFINITELY Seeing

Some MMO appearances are basically guaranteed. Here’s what’s locked in (or as close as we can get):

Final Fantasy XIV: Next Expansion Announcement

This is the big one.

FFXIV had Fan Fest in Anaheim (April 24-25) and Berlin (July), where they traditionally announce new expansions. But Summer Game Fest is the global reveal. The cinematic trailer. The hype bomb.

What to Expect:

  • Expansion title reveal
  • New jobs (maybe two this time)
  • New zones and story teaser
  • Graphics update showcase (they’ve been teasing this for months)
  • Probable late 2026/early 2027 release window

Why It Matters: FFXIV announcements are events. Yoshi-P shows up. The community loses their minds. It’s appointment viewing.

Hype Level: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

World of Warcraft: Patch 12.1 & Season 2 Deep Dive

Midnight launched in March, and Patch 12.0.5/12.0.7 are rolling out through spring. But Summer Game Fest is where Blizzard showcases what’s next.

What to Expect:

  • Patch 12.1 trailer (new zone, raid, and Mythic+ season)
  • Season 2 details (PvP updates, balance changes)
  • Possibly a teaser for the next expansion in the Worldsoul Saga trilogy
  • Housing system updates (they promised more features post-launch)

Why It Matters: WoW is the MMO king. Even if you don’t play it, its announcements set the tone for the genre.

Hype Level: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Guild Wars 2: Next Quarterly Update or Expansion Tease

ArenaNet has been consistent with Visions of Eternity quarterly updates. Summer Game Fest is where they spotlight what’s next.

What to Expect:

  • Trailer for the next story chapter
  • New elite spec or weapon teases
  • Possible expansion announcement (if they’re ready)
  • Homesteads updates

Why It Matters: GW2 doesn’t get the spotlight often. When it does, it needs to make noise.

Hype Level: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Elder Scrolls Online: Season 2 Reveal

ESO’s new seasonal model launched in April with Season Zero. Summer Game Fest is the perfect stage for Season 2.

What to Expect:

  • Season 2 cinematic trailer
  • New trial, dungeons, and zone reveals
  • Class refresh details (probably Templar or Sorcerer)
  • Battle pass cosmetics showcase

Why It Matters: ESO’s pivot to free seasonal content is bold. They need to prove it works.

Hype Level: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

The Maybes: MMOs That Might Show Up

These aren’t guaranteed, but they’re possible:

Lost Ark: Western Content Roadmap

Smilegate has been aggressive with Lost Ark updates. Summer Game Fest could be where they showcase what’s coming for the West in Q3/Q4.

What We Might See:

  • New raid announcements
  • Class reveals
  • Story chapter trailers

Likelihood: Medium. Lost Ark doesn’t always get SGF spotlight, but it’s popular enough to warrant it.

New World: Season 11 or Major Update (If It Survives)

Amazon’s New World has been on life support. If they have anything major planned, SGF is where they’d announce it.

What We Might See:

  • New zone or expansion reveal
  • Seasonal content roadmap
  • Desperate attempt to win back players

Likelihood: Low. Unless Amazon is going all-in on saving this game, don’t expect much.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Legacy Update

SWTOR refuses to die. Bioware might use SGF to announce new story content or a major update.

What We Might See:

  • New expansion trailer
  • Modernization updates (graphics, UI overhaul)

Likelihood: Low-Medium. SWTOR doesn’t get big showcases often, but it’s possible.

The Wild Cards: Games We’re Hoping For (But Probably Won’t Get)

Here’s the wishlist. The long shots. The “please, Gaming Gods” prayers:

Ashes of Creation: Actual Release Date

Intrepid Studios has been in Alpha 2 forever. Could Summer Game Fest be where they finally announce a beta or launch window?

What We Want:

  • Beta dates
  • Release window
  • Gameplay showcase that proves the game is real

Likelihood: Very low. But we can dream.

Riot MMO: First Look

Riot Games has been working on an MMO set in the League of Legends universe for years. Summer Game Fest would be the perfect reveal stage.

What We Want:

  • Cinematic trailer
  • Gameplay teaser
  • Any confirmation that this game exists

Likelihood: Almost zero. Riot has said it’s years away. But imagine if they surprised us.

Project TL (Lineage Eternal): Western Announcement

NCSoft’s Project TL has been in development hell for a decade. If they’re ever bringing it West, SGF is the stage.

What We Want:

  • Confirmation of Western release
  • Gameplay showcase
  • Release window

Likelihood: Nonexistent. But stranger things have happened.

Blue Protocol: Western Launch Date (Finally)

Bandai Namco’s Blue Protocol has been “coming to the West” for years. Summer Game Fest could finally give us a date.

What We Want:

  • Confirmed Western launch date
  • Localization details
  • Crossplay confirmation

Likelihood: Low, but not impossible. They’ve been teasing Western release forever.

What About Xbox and PlayStation Showcases?

Summer Game Fest weekend isn’t just Geoff’s show. Xbox and (possibly) PlayStation will have their own events.

Xbox Games Showcase – June 2026

Microsoft traditionally holds their showcase during SGF weekend. Expect:

  • Fable (finally)
  • Gears of War: E-Day deep dive
  • Possible MMO announcements if they have any

PlayStation State of Play (Unlikely but Possible)

Sony skipped E3 for years and rarely does SGF. But if they show up:

  • Possible FFXIV partnership announcements
  • Indie MMO spotlights

The PC Gaming Show & Future Games Show

Two other showcases happen during SGF weekend:

PC Gaming Show

Focused on PC games. Great for indie MMOs and smaller projects.

Possible MMO Appearances:

  • Palia updates
  • Albion Online expansions
  • Indie MMO reveals

Future Games Show

Broader focus. Trailers, gameplay, and surprises.

Possible MMO Appearances:

  • Throne and Liberty updates
  • Asian MMO Western announcements

What NOT to Expect

Let’s temper expectations:

Don’t Expect:

  • E3-level chaos (those days are gone)
  • Every MMO to show up (most won’t)
  • Groundbreaking announcements from struggling games
  • Riot MMO reveal (it’s too early)
  • Ashes of Creation launch date (they’re not ready)
  • New World resurrection (it’s too late)

Summer Game Fest is big, but it’s not magic.

Most MMOs will skip it. Many announcements will be iterative, not revolutionary. And some of the hype will fizzle by July.

But that’s okay. Because even a few solid MMO announcements make the whole weekend worth it.

Boss Mode’s Predictions

Here’s what I think will actually happen:

The Winners:

  • FFXIV dominates with next expansion reveal. Community goes wild. Trending on social media for days.
  • WoW showcases Patch 12.1 with a killer cinematic. Hype is real.
  • ESO surprises with Season 2 content that looks genuinely good.

The Disappointments:

  • New World either no-shows or announces something underwhelming.
  • Ashes of Creation still not ready. Another year, another delay.
  • Riot MMO remains silent. We’re still years away.

The Surprise:

  • An unannounced MMO from a major publisher. Something nobody saw coming. Maybe from Ubisoft? Maybe from Amazon? Maybe from a Korean studio going West?

That’s the dream, anyway.

The Countdown Begins

40 days until Summer Game Fest 2026.

40 days until we find out what’s next for our favorite MMOs.

40 days of speculation, leaks, and hype trains running at full speed.

E3 is dead. Long live Summer Game Fest.

And for MMO fans, June 5th can’t come fast enough.

Boss Mode’s Takeaway

“Summer Game Fest has become the only gaming event that matters. For MMO players, it’s Christmas in June. Will it deliver? History says yes. Expectations say maybe. Hype says absolutely.”

Look, I’m cautiously optimistic.

Summer Game Fest has delivered in the past. Big reveals. Exciting trailers. Real news.

But I’m also a realist. Most MMOs won’t show up. Many announcements will be incremental. The “biggest SGF yet” claim is probably marketing hyperbole.

Still, I’ll be watching.

Because even if we only get FFXIV’s next expansion and WoW’s next patch, that’s enough.

And if we get a surprise? An unannounced MMO? A Riot reveal?

That would make the whole summer.

So mark your calendars. Clear your schedule for June 5th.

And get ready to see what the future of MMOs looks like.

Or at least, what publishers want us to think it looks like.

Either way, it’ll be a show.

See you June 5th.
